Hallmarks & Guarantees

At Simatta Bijoux, transparency and trust are at the heart of our commitment. That is why we want to explain clearly what hallmarks are, and why they matter when you buy a piece of gold, silver or platinum jewelry.

What is a hallmark?

A hallmark is an official mark stamped on a piece of precious metal jewelry. It certifies the purity of the metal (legal fineness) and, in some cases, the identity of the manufacturer or importer.

Mandatory hallmarks in France

In France, hallmarks are mandatory for all jewelry in:

  • Gold ≥ 3 grams
  • Silver ≥ 30 grams
  • Platinum ≥ 0.5 gram

Below these weights, a hallmark is not mandatory, but it remains a sign of quality and transparency.

The different types of hallmarks

The fineness mark (or guarantee hallmark):

Applied by French Customs, it certifies the precious metal content of the jewelry.

Here are the main symbols:

  • Gold 750/1000 (18k): an eagle’s head
  • Gold 585/1000 (14k): a scallop shell
  • Gold 375/1000 (9k): a clover
  • Silver 925/1000: a head of Minerva
  • Platinum 950/1000: a dog’s head

The maker’s or importer’s mark:

It takes the form of a lozenge containing initials and a symbol. It identifies the craftsperson or company responsible for manufacturing or importing the piece.

All our jewelry complies with French legislation and bears the required hallmarks.

Why do these hallmarks matter?

✔️ Legal guarantee of the quality of the precious metal

✔️ Security for resale or insurance

✔️ Proof of authenticity in case of dispute

✔️ Traceability of the jewelry

What do these hallmarks look like?

A legal obligation

The presence of these hallmarks is checked by the French Customs authority (Direction Générale des Douanes). Any piece sold without a hallmark when it should bear one is illegal.
